St. Joseph’s Manor closed to public due to illness

An acute respiratory illness outbreak has occurred at St. Joseph’s Manor in Elliot Lake, so St. Joseph’s General hospital has closed it to the public.

Algoma Public Health nursing executive, Connie Free, says on Saturday the health unit declared an acute respiratory illness outbreak.

She says the public is asked to stay away, except on compassionate grounds and for any direct family members of palliative patients.

She adds she does not know how long the closure will be in place, but anyone with questions can contact the manor directly or the health unit.

Free says elderly patients are at heightened risk of acquiring an illness due to weakened immune systems and the public’s cooperation is appreciated.

Please avoid coming to visit if you have been experiencing any illness. The unit would like to remind everyone there are several actions you can take to protect yourself and others from contracting illness:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • If you are not feeling well, stay at home and rest. · If you are sick, do not visit loved ones in the hospital or long-term care facilities.

The unit will provide an update when required.
