One-day school strikes underway in local districts

Schools in all three districts, Sudbury, Manitoulin, and Algoma will be affected by various one-day strikes by teachers’ unions.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is holding a one-day strike today in the Algoma District, which will affect all elementary schools with the Algoma School Board.

All elementary schools are shut down but secondary schools remain open.

The Rainbow District School Board will also be closing its elementary schools in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts on Tuesday and Thursday when local ETFO members will be on the picket line.

Elementary and secondary schools within the Huron-Superior Catholic School Board will also be closed next Tuesday with the Ontario English Catholic Teacher’s Association holding a one-day of action.

The main issues are wages, e-learning and larger class sizes.
Meanwhile, there is a glimmer of hope in one of the four disputes.
Provincial officials met with ETFO negotiators yesterday at the request of the mediator, the first face-to-face session in six weeks.
While it is not known how much progress has been made, the two sides have agreed to meet again today.
