A new sports centre, as well as an arts and culture hub, are not expected to be built this year in Elliot Lake, but the funding applications process is underway.
City CAO Dan Gagnon informed the council on Monday he found out at the ROMA conference that the provincial government will be talking to their federal counterparts in regards to the sports hub.
He says he is optimistic that the funding will come through, but it is likely to take a while and he does not expect to see shovels in the ground until 2021.
He says some site preparation can be carried out for the sports hub, but the city has to be careful because any work done prior to provincial and federal government grant approval might not receive financial support.
Gagnon adds since the insurance payout from the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre is already available, he is working with the Cultural Spaces Canada Fund on the first step.
He says he talked to the representative from the Cultural Spaces Canada Fund and the first step would be to apply for the funding to complete an in-depth feasibility study.
Gagnon expects that timeline to take them into late Spring.
