Elliot Lake City Council was briefed by its Chief Administrative Officer regarding the temporary closure of the Elliot Lake Public Library and other spaces in the Pearson Plaza.
CAO Dan Gagnon told council Monday night the city’s Building Department issued an order to comply with the Ontario Building Code at the Elliot Lake Public Library and to some degree in an adjacent leased retail space in the facility.
He says the order was issued on January 7th.
Gagnon adds the building owner and landlord McCowan and Associates responded on January 16th that it needed to close the library, the common areas and the leased retail space for remedial repairs.
Gagnon says the council is currently seeking clarification from the landlord as to the cause of the roof leaks, the scope of the repairs needed and the length of the potential closure.
He stresses the decision to close the spaces was the decision of the landlord, but Dollarama and Foodland remain unaffected.
The city is now waiting for the report from the landlord and the library will continue to be shut down until remedial action is carried out
