Warning of inspection scam in Algoma

Inspections by Algoma Public Health for restaurants and other businesses are always free, but someone tried to make some quick money.

Chris Spooney, manager of Environmental Health at Algoma Public health says a local restaurant was contacted by someone pretending to be an inspector with the health unit.

He says the person told the restaurant operator they had a complaint and would have to carry out an inspection, and then asked for credit card information to charge a service fee.

If anyone is contacted by someone attempting to schedule an inspection and asking for a credit card, call your local police and the health unit, emphasizes Spooney.

He adds inspectors would never ask for credit card information, and they also carry a valid badge and photo ID.
