Fatal collision near Sudbury

Nipissing West OPP is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash on Highway 17 in Greater Sudbury.

The collision happened just east of Long Lake Road just after 9:00pm Sunday.

Officers say the investigation revealed that an eastbound motorcycle crossed the centre line and hit a westbound pick-up truck head-on. Both vehicles caught fire on impact.

The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity has not yet been confirmed. The driver of the pick-up, and lone occupant, was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Collision Investigator (TCI).

Police say Highway 17 between Regional Road 55 and Highway 69 was closed for close to five hours.

Members from the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment and the Northeast Region Traffic Incident Management & Enforcement (TIME) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Sudbury Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Greater Sudbury Fire Services and the Greater Sudbury Police Service responded to the call.
