Social services and climate change were the hot issues at the candidate’s debate last night in Elliot Lake.

There are five candidates vying for the federal parliamentary seat: NDP incumbent Carol Hughes, Liberal

candidate Heather Wilson, Dave Williamson of the Conservative Party of Canada, Green Party candidate

Max Chapman, and Dave DeLisle of the People’s Party of Canada.

Both NDP Carol Hughes and Green Party Max Chapman supported the idea of a guaranteed income, while Conservative Dave Williamson and PPC Dave DeLisle would focus on the reduction of taxes and working toward affordability. Heather Wilson of the Liberal Party emphasized security through jobs and education.

Around 100 people took in the debate at the Moose Family Centre, with attendees and candidates alike commenting on the high quality of questions brought forward by the public.

The debate was sponsored by the Elliot Lake Standard.
