Neuro-Trauma Education Day held in Espanola

Keeping up with the latest techniques and equipment to deal with trauma in hospital was the focus of a professional development day for regional medical staff.

Espanola Regional Hospital Foundation communications spokesperson, Terri Noble, says the hospital hosted several people from across the Northeast Region including Blind River, Manitoulin Island, Elliot Lake, and Chapleau.

She says the presenters were clinicians from Health Sciences North out of Sudbury specializing in the medical-surgical intensive care unit, neurosurgery and trauma programs.

Noble adds the presentations also included specialized surgery equipment, initial trauma assessments, and more.

The staff met on September 10th for the full day of learning.

Noble adds the presenters complimented Espanola on the facility, as well as the overwhelming turn-out, which indicated the critical need and importance of critical care education for rural emergency department nurses.

Noble stresses all the small rural communities handle life-threatening situations and education is essential so they are prepared for any type of emergency.

She adds, hospital staff do not necessarily see these patient’s presentations on a regular basis, so the expertise of Health Sciences North, which is considered the HUB facility, is essential for rural sites to stay current with Emergency Best Practice.

They are hoping it will become an annual event and thanked the partners for coming together for what, according to Noble, was ‘an amazing experience.’
