Public input sought on Swing Bridge

It’s the oldest structure on a highway in Ontario and with that comes maintenance problems and ongoing challenges.

The Swing Bridge on Highway Six serves as the only highway access to Manitoulin Island, but is coming near the end of its service life.

Stantec Consulting Limited, the consultants hired by the Ministry of Transportation, has completed the transportation needs assessment and now wants public input for the preferred options.

The company will reveal the options today, which could include maintaining the bridge, replacing it or constructing a possible chunnel under the North Channel.

The open house will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre in Little Current.

The preferred plan is expected to be finalized in late 2020 followed by another public review.
