Day of Mourning serves as a reminder and call to action: Hughes

The National Day of Mourning serves as a reminder and call to action says AMK MP, Carol Hughes.

The fact that people are killed, injured, or become sick at work due to poor enforcement of health and safety regulations is a tragedy, says Hughes.

She adds that why nearly a 1,000 workers die from work related injuries and illnesses every year, while others are injured or suffer from occupational diseases.

The day was marked in ceremonies in communities in the riding seven new names unveiled at the Miner’s Memorial Wall in Elliot Lake.

The flag was lowered to half-mast and wreaths laid at the memorial at Domtar’s Espanola Mill yesterday morning for the National Day of Mourning.

Local 156 President Dean Houle, Local 74 President Joanne Lamothe and IBEW 956 Todd Tessier all spoke a few words about the importance of remembrance, but also advocated for safety for workers in the work place.

Company senior management; Carol Lapointe, Shawn Vollicks and Teresa Miller also took part.
