National Day of Mourning: April 28th

Over 80 countries around the world pause to remember those who have been injured or died in the workplace, including Canada, as part of the National Day of Mourning.

Elliot Lake will add six names: Sydney Craig, Horst Hermann Hartmann, John “Sean” McGlade, Norman Orser, William Addison White and Norman Whitehead, to the Miners Memorial Wall as part of this year’s ceremony.

Algoma-Manitoulin MPP, Mike Mantha, says it is important people take time to gather to acknowledge the sacrifice of family members and co-workers.

According to the Association of Workers Compensation Boards of Canada, every year there are nearly 1,000 workplace fatalities in Canada and over 250,000 lost time injury and disease claims are accepted by compensation boards.
