Icebreaking in Georgian Bay and McGregor Bay

Shipping on the Great Lakes gets a helping hand from the Canadian Coast Guard every Spring in helping to break up ice along the routes.

The Canadian Coast Guard ship, the Pierre Radisson, made its way to McGregor Bay today to assist shipping at the Lafarge Canada Whitefish River terminal.
The Coast Guard has provided icebreaking assistance to over 400 commercial vessels so far this season.

All ice surface users should plan their ice activities carefully, use caution on the ice and avoid the shipping lanes and icebreaking operations. Even though there may be cold temperatures, the ice can be expected to be deteriorating naturally due to spring conditions and the effects of the sun. Extreme caution must be exercised should anyone venture out onto the ice.

A recent video of CCGS Pierre Radisson in action on the St. Lawrence Seaway can be viewed on the Coast Guard’s Twitter at: https://twitter.com/CoastGuardCAN/status/1113833745491079169
