Espanola council defeats motion to expand summer beach program

The Espanola Recreation Culture Advisory Committee recommendation to expand a summer program at Clear Lake Beach from three to four days has been rejected by council.

Deputy Mayor Bill Foster pointed out the pool is shut down in July, so the program could offset the closure by offering more programming for youngsters, but the final decision came down to the cost.

Last summer, the town received a donation of $3,500 from the Shelley Newton Memorial Fund, but that funding is not available this year.

Adding one more day would cost an additional $1,200, but with budget talks underway, council is looking at all avenues to curb costs, so they rejected the recommendation.

The program will still run, but only three days of the week.
