No flower baskets in Espanola

They have been part of the Espanola main street for years, but Espanola council has rejected a proposal to install large hanging flower baskets along Centre Street.
For well over a decade, the town has installed large flower baskets along Highway Six as part of its summer beautification program.

The cost of the flowers and ongoing maintenance adds up to around $7,000 a year.

However, councilors see it as an unnecessary expense with little value and it ties up Public Works staff that could be doing other work elsewhere.

In the end, Espanola Mayor Jill Beer is the only member to vote in favour, so the motion was defeated.

The motion did not include numerous flower beds that are maintained with the assistance of the Espanola Gardeners.
