Elliot Lake considers expanding proposed multiplex use

The proposed new multi-use centre for Elliot Lake called The Hub may expanded to accommodate the loss of space at the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre.

The city is aware that the theatre and museum portion of the Lester B. Pearson will have to be demolished following the partial roof collapse, so the city has to look at other options to house the facilities elsewhere, as well as workshop space for the arts community.

City CAO, Dan Gagnon, says adding in the addition could have economies of scale and would not require too much more additional space.

The proposed $41 million sportsplex was to house an arena, curling rink, pool and recreational space.
Council gave Gagnon the green light to look at the cost of the additions, which will require funding supports from all three levels of government.
Mayor Dan Marchisella pointed out the city has until an April 6 deadline to put in a new plan in place for the Ontario government.
