Civic Centre theatre will be demolished – tenants must find new accommodations

The theatre section of the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre will be demolished following the partial roof collapse a week ago Thursday, but the rest of the building may still be structurally sound.

City CAO, Dan Gagnon, also told the tenants yesterday they will have to find new accommodations.

The recreation department and welcome centre will be moved to the Collins Hall.

Theatre productions will also use the hall, which re-opens today.

Other tenants: the Elliot Lake Art Club, driver licence testing, arts and culture group Ariel, and Community Living Algoma will have to find other accommodations and Gagnon also suggested they compile as complete an inventory as possible.

The travelling Northern Ontario Art Association exhibit won’t be moving on to another community next week because no one is allowed in the building until the Ministry of Labour clears the way.

Gagnon adds the he future of the rest of the building depends on the engineering report and insurance claims.

The city has a $9-million policy on the building and a second one for contents.
