Police are suggesting if a relative calls wanting money for a dire emergency, call other family members before sending any money to confirm that the call is legitimate.
Manitoulin OPP media officer, Marie Ford, says an Island resident has been scammed for over $20,000 by a man alleging he was his grandson.
Ford says the resident said he had received a call from a man crying hysterically that he was his grandson and needed help.
The fraudster told him he had been in a collision and needed money to avoid criminal charges.
He sent over $20,000 to a Quebec address before finally calling police.
Ford adds a fraud prevention seminar will be held on Wednesday, February 6th at the Little Current Library for anyone who wishes to attend.
