Official Launch of Lung Cancer Screening pilot project

Health Sciences North is launching the Lung Cancer Screening Pilot for People at High Risk, a pilot project in partnership with Cancer Care Ontario.

The hospital was selected as one of the three sites in Ontario.

Mark Hartman with Cancer Care Ontario says this is the first pilot of its kind in Canada.

He adds it will help Cancer Care Ontario learn how to run a province-wide lung cancer screening program for people at high risk of getting lung cancer.

This pilot will focus on peoples in the Espanola, Elliot Lake, North Shore, Manitoulin and Sudbury area with a special emphasis on French and Indigenous peoples.

In Ontario, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death.

Lung cancer is responsible for 25 percent of all cancer deaths; approximately the same number of cancer deaths as the next three leading causes combined.
