Historic wildland fire season officially ends

This year’s wildland fire season, a season unlike anything other this province has experienced in over a decade, is officially over.

With more than 1,000 wildland fires in central and Northern Ontario, 2018 was one of the busiest fire seasons in the province’s history, says Jeff Yurek, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.

He adds to meet this challenge, the government has so far provided an additional $100 million in funding to successfully fight the fires.

The Minister also thanked the provinces and territories, Parks Canada, the United States and Mexico for their vital assistance.

Yurk adds it was a challenging season, but he is proud to report as of October 31st, all active fires are officially out.
