Traffic slowdown to highlight speeding concerns planned by SRFN

Serpent River First Nation will be hosting a traffic slowdown on Highway 17 to highlight community concerns about speeding.

Chief Elaine Johnston says there will be traffic slow down on Highway 17 in Serpent River First Nation near the Trading Post this Friday, October 26th between 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

Johnston says there have been pedestrian fatalities over the last decade with a few hit and run accidents and near misses and the safety of our people, especially our young people, is a great concern to our community.

Members will be handing out information in reaction to a recent hit and run pedestrian accident on The Trans-Canada through the First Nation territory.

The Ministry of Transportation worked with Serpent River to change the four-lane to a two-lane highway with bicycle lanes on each side, and speed limits were also reduced to 70 kilometres per hour, but Johnston says the law is being ignored by many motorists.
