Community safety zone stays in place

Espanola is a community where speeding fines can be doubled along most of its main street.

Councillor Ron Duplessis asked council back in June to have the town look into why Espanola had Community Safety Zone signs across almost all of Highway 6 -Centre Street.

At Tuesday’s meeting, a motion was put on the table to maintain the safety zone.

Duplessis disagreed stating the legislation was put in place to protect people in special areas, such as schools, long-term care facilities and hospitals, not commercial main byways.

However, Councillor Heather Mallott disagreed stating as a resident of the south end, the signage has reduced the number of speeders and she feels the signage serves a real purpose.

The motion passed in a recorded vote of 5 to 2and the zoning will stay in place.
