Rumours led to lockdowns at Espanola schools

Espanola Police Sargeant Bill Lamore says police were at all five Espanola schools during a hold and secure.

He says yesterday morning around 8:30am, police received information Facebook posts were circulating about a potential threat to a high school, and as a result, all five schools in the Espanola area implemented a “hold and secure” until 1:30pm.

Lamour adds the OPP and service worked together to track the origin of the threat, which suggested that a “drive by shooting” at either the Espanola High School or Manitoulin Secondary School might occur, following an incident at Manitoulin High last Friday.

As reported by The Moose yesterday, a youth was arrested and charged with uttering death threats and assault in that incident.

Lamour says police talked to an individual who admitted to telling friends rumours that had no valid basis and police determined that there was no specific threat to conduct a “drive by shooting” at either of the two schools.
