Health unit identifies blue-green algae in area

An advisory has been issued for Bass Lake in Blind River after Algoma Public Health found blue-green algae in the water.

The public is being told not eat fish organs from the lake because the organs may contain toxins after the fish ingested the algae.

The health unit is also telling people not to drink the water or use it for cooking or bathing purposes and don’t let your pets drink it.

The public should also avoid swimming at the site.

APH says don’t try boiling the water with the expectation that will get rid of the algae.

The health unit says this only make matters worse because the hot water breaks open the algae cells which releases the toxins inside.
