A local national park’s borders are being expanded.
Parks Canada in partnership with the Bruce Trail Conservancy has reached an agreement to acquire new land to expand the Bruce Peninsula National Park.
Conservancy CEO, Beth Gilhespy says the government has acquired just over 3,200 acres called Driftwood Cove located at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula.
The property was publicly listed for $20.6 million, however, until the transaction has closed, the purchase price cannot be made public.
Gilhespy says the purchase should close in November.
The acquisition adds eight kilometres to the Bruce Trail, represents 22 percent of the park’s coast and is home to at least 10 federally listed species at risk including the Massasauga rattler, has some of the oldest trees in eastern North America and features dozens of significant cave systems
