There may be a flurry of activity in clerk’s municipal offices in the next week with the deadline looming for those registering to take part in the upcoming municipal election.
There are still several municipalities waiting for more candidates with a few interesting races in the local area.
There are only two incumbent mayors running unopposed: Elliot Lake’s Dan Marchisella and Laurier Falldien in Nairn & Hyman Township.
Sables-Spanish River Township’s long-time mayor, Leslie Gamble, has not declared his intention to run. However, three men will try to win the seat; they are David Wolff, Doug Steinke and Harry Hobbs.
In Espanola, Mayor Ron Piche is seeking another term and is being challenged by Jill Beer.
And, in Blind River, Mayor Sue Jensen will be challenged by Sally Hagman and Alex Solomon.
Many Manitoulin Island municipalities have not posted contenders.
The deadline for filing nomination papers for the October 22 municipal election is Friday, July 27th.
Municipal clerks will publish the candidate lists on Monday, July 30th.
