Off duty Greater Sudbury police officer dead after scuba diving incident

An off-duty Greater Sudbury Police officer is dead following a scuba diving incident.

Police say around 11:00am on Sunday, recreational divers were in the quarry near Moose Mountain, north of Capreol, when one of them surfaced and appeared to be in distress.
Divers immediately swam to the man’s aid and began CPR.

41-year old Scott Champagne was pronounced dead on the scene.

Champagne worked as a Special Constable at the Sudbury Court House since 2001 and was also a member of the police auxiliary unit.
Since the incident is a sudden death, the Coroner’s office is investigating.
