North Shore First Nations celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today, being the summer solstice and the longest day of the year marks National Indigenous Peoples Day and First Nations throughout the Moose listening area are celebrating in many different ways.

Whitefish River will kick of their activities with a Sunrise Ceremony and various activities throughout the day includes boat and bell rock tours, hike Dreamer’s Rock, various games for young and old alike, a community barbecue, capped off with fireworks.

Serpent River First Nation is hosting a powwow involving seven schools from the community, Elliot Lake and surrounding area, which will begin at 10:00am, and also includes various information booths and various teachings, such as jingle dance, traditional plants and medicine pouch.

Mississauga First Nations’ festivities run from ten am to two pm at the sports complex and the day will be finished off with fireworks at the ball fields.

And Sagamok Anishinawbek First Nation will host their celebrations on Friday from one pm to five pm, since it is also their Treaty Day.

Festivities include plenty of family oriented activities, such as bouncy castles, craft booths and games.
