Signage updated welcoming people to Elliot Lake

The City of Elliot Lake is recognizing the heritage and importance of acknowledging First Nation territory in different ways.

Elliot Lake’s new ‘welcome sign’ has just been updated with a modern appeal and is also now trilingual.

The word ‘Aanii’ as well as the usual ‘welcome’ and ‘bienvenue’ in English and French have now been added.

Aanii comes from the Ojibwe and means hello or welcome.

It’s part of the city’s new focus to acknowledge the traditional territory and dovetails with the city’s hope to have a working agreement put in place with Serpent River First Nation.

Members of city council and staff will also be joining with chief and council of Serpent River this Thursday at noon at the Miners Memorial to also raise the First Nation flag in a special ceremony.
