Elliot Lake council unanimously passed what is being called ‘a pivotal resolution indicating support for an equal partnership’ with Serpent River First Nation for future waterfront and rural development within its municipal borders.
Mayor Dan Marchisella says with the motion passed on Monday night, the city recognizes the value of the First Nation’s insight into their traditional and the city’s municipal territory and that both communities have much to gain working together towards sustainable development.
He adds both communities have the potential to step into the future as leaders of how municipalities and First Nations can and should work together for mutual benefit.
The resolution will now be sent to the Serpent River First Nation for consideration.
