Elliot Lake waiting for word on additional funding for hub

The City of Elliot Lake will likely have to wait a while before it hears whether it has been approved for additional funding for the new Elliot Lake Recreation Facility.
This week the province announced it is providing $13.7 million in funding for the new facility

But, city CAO, Dan Gagnon says it is estimated around $41 million to build, but applications for federal funding and other grants are also in the works.

He says the municipal share will likely be 27% or $11.07M, but the City has applied to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and if successful their contribution would go towards decreasing the local share.

And if the federal government comes through with covering 40% of the cost totalling $16.4M, the City will be a position to start the bill.

However, Gagnon cautions that those applications will likely only be clarified this fall due to the election.

Gagnon says it is unknown how long it will take for the NOHFC to ramp back up after the provincial election.

The proposed community hub, which is to be built on the Centennial Arena property will include a pool, arena, small gym, walking track and wellness program area.
