Ontario government announces funding for Elliot Lake hub

Ontario is enhancing local services and programs offered in Elliot Lake with a new recreational and community hub.

The province announced yesterday it is supporting the creation of the Elliot Lake Recreation Facility.  Ontario plans to invest up to $13.7 million toward total projected cost of $41 million.

The proposed community hub would be an inclusive facility, which will include a pool, arena, small gym, walking track and wellness program area.

The new hub will be built on the Centennial arena property.

City CAO, Dan Gagnon, stated back in January, the best case scenario is to receive maximum financial support from the province and federal government with the city carrying a minimum of a $7-million debt, maximum, $13.5-million.

Depending on funding, the project could take three to five years to complete.
