Elliot Lake Mayor optimistic about provincial hub funding

Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella is “ecstatic” that the Ontario Liberal government has given indications in its budget to provide funding for a $41 million hub.

The comment in last Thursday’s budget states; “Elliot Lake Community Hub- Building a community hub for the North Shore that will include a pool, arena, small gym, walking track and wellness program area, which will help to engage seniors, veterans, youth, athletes and social club attendees.”

Following a year of discussions, council selected the Centennial Arena property as the location and applied for funding in January.

“I’m ecstatic and thankful that the provincial government has heard our appeals for investment into our recreational and community assets,” said Marchisella.

Still with the story, City Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Gagnon says, “the process will be considerably easier to manage now with the province’s formal support in the 2018 budget.”

Gagnon is also cautiously optimistic having the Hub highlighted in the budget should help the city secure funding from whatever government is elected after the June provincial election.
