Espanola OPP – the cost of renovations

Renovating the Espanola Ontario Provincial Police detachment would carry a high cost for Espanola taxpayers if the town decides to switch from municipal to provincial policing

Yesterday, The Moose reported the Town of Espanola is asking for a two-month extension to the March 22nd deadline to sign a deal to switch to OPP.

That’s because council had to wait four months to get the estimate for renovations of the OPP detachment on Highway 17, a cost to be borne by taxpayers if the transition takes place.

The cost is estimated at just over $420,000 and does not include the cost of renovating the municipal police station.

Town staff continues to crunch the numbers and will have them available for public review in late Spring.

It’s not known if the OPP will agree to the extension
