Espanola Lions Club celebrating 70 years

The Espanola Lions Club is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

Lions spokesman, Grant Lewis, says back in 1948, a group of men got together to form the new club and there were strict guidelines including elections, dues to be paid and regular meetings.

But, the most important requirement was: “The advancement of civic, cultural, and moral welfare of the community.”

The organization has literally raised thousands of dollars for local, national and international projects.

For example, funds to build houses following the 2004 tsunami, and closer to home,  the annual Lions Toy Drive, drives for the local food bank and contributing to Habitat for Humanity and now, the Espanola Therapeutic Park.

Lewis adds the club will be hosting several events throughout the year to mark the milestone.
