Operation Safe Trucking blitz looks at truck accidents

The Ontario Provincial Police held the Operation Safe Trucking Blitz in 2017 focusing on trucks to see if new programs can be put in place to prevent future incidents.

The blitz found there were 6,200 collisions involving trucks in Ontario with 87 fatalities.

The OPP laid 537 improper documentation charges where truckers had expired or no licence to drive and 233 distracted charges, the majority where they were talking or texting on cell phones.

The blitz also saw 336 speeding charges, 111 follow too closely violations, 185 defective equipment charges and removed 71 unsafe vehicles from the roads.

The data will be reviewed and could lead to new legislation governing truck traffic in Ontario.
