Two deadly snowmobile crashes

Police are advising snowmobile drivers to ride safely following two deadly crashes on the holiday weekend.

Todd Smith, 51, died in a crash east of Tillsonburg about 8:00pm Sunday.
Smith, from South West Oxford Township, was driving in a wooded area near Baseline Road, police said.

No other riders or snowmobiles were involved in the collision.

Hours earlier, an ATV and snowmobile crash on the Sydenham River in Wallaceburg killed a 32-year-old Brantford man and sent another man to hospital with serious injuries.
Neither was named by police.

Chatham-Kent police said a 34-year-old Wallaceburg man remains in hospital.

Police continue to investigate both collisions, but they’re also issuing some stern safety reminders.

OPP Const. Laura Brown emphasized the need for helmet and that is also the responsibility of drivers to watch out for winter vehicles like snowmobiles.

She emphasizes one of the best ways to stay safe during snowmobile season is to use trails travelled by other riders and maintained by snowmobile clubs.
