Tim Hortons for Manitoulin on hold

A Tim Horton’s in Little Current is on hold because of demands from the Ministry of Transportation.

Denis Lefebvre owns the Espanola, McKerrow and Blind River franchises and wants to expand to Manitoulin Island.

Lefebvre has signed a letter of intent with developer Rob Sheppard, but the plans are on hold.

The potential location is Highway Six across the bridge, but the ministry is demanding a third lane of traffic with tapered lane, an environmental study and another engineering study, which could cost Sheppard half-a-million dollars.

The MTO carried out a traffic study on Haweater Weekend and is basing its demands on that study, but Sheppard says that is unfair because the weekend has higher than usual traffic due to the holiday and local events.

Sheppard purchased the property from the municipality through his business, Sheppard Custom Building, nearly two years ago stating at that time his intent to build a fast-food outlet which would employ at least 10 people.

Sheppard is hoping the MTO will reassess the demands so the project can move forward.
