Elliot Lake council approves public hearings on assisted housing projects

Elliot Lake council has given the go ahead for two public hearings on assisted housing projects in the city.

The Elliot Lake Women’s Group, which operates Maple Gate House for Women, has applied for zoning amendments for two houses they purchased to help the homeless in the city.

The first home, on Lawrence Avenue, would be a transitional home for women who are waiting for housing in the area.
The other on Mississauga Avenue, would be the new location for a local men’s shelter.

But, that will depend on the public hearing and whether council gives final approval to zoning amendments to have the homes become transitional dwellings.

Concerns which will have to be addressed include enough parking, security cameras and location.

Council also indicated they had already received a petition opposing the housing, but those matters will be raised at the public hearings set for January 8th.
