Multi-hub application delayed for more financial specifics

The deadline to apply for funding a $41 million dollar multi-use hub in Elliot Lake is fast approaching and council is cutting it close to the wire.

Several councillors are looking for more specific financial information on the project before giving the go-ahead to apply for funding.

Council chose the Centennial Arena land as its primary location for the hub, which could house a new arena, pool, walking track, gym and curling rink.

It would replace the aging arena, pool and curling club and potentially Collins Hall.

Council had deferred the go ahead until the city’s director of community service, Wendy Rowland, comes back with a more detailed financial breakdown of costs and potential revenue.

Rowland estimates the total cost of the facility would be almost $41 million.
The city would pay about $14 million with the province picking up 33 percent and the feds, 40 percent if the entire application is approved.

Rowland says an attempt will be made to have the information available to council at its next meeting on January 8 to allow time to submit the application for the January 15th deadline.
