Elliot Lake council updated – Denison Mines

Former mine sites are dangerous and can mask hidden dangers.

That is according to Denison Environmental Services General Manager, Janet Lowe, who says more public awareness is needed to warn people about the dangers they can encounter by going on to former mine sites.

She said residents have to be aware of hazards, such as submerged mine tailings can make animals sick if they drink the water or dogs off leash can step into beaver traps.
There is also the possibility hikers could fall into holes that “are deeper than we think” and have not even been mapped.

The company monitors water quality and secures the sites as part of the regulated decommissioning of the lands formerly occupied by the mines and the tailings they produced.

Lowe’s report to council at its meeting Monday night focused on the ongoing work at the former Denison Mine site including signage to highlight the dangers surrounding the decommissioned Dennison Mine.
