Elliot Lake council applies to program to convert vehicles

The City of Elliot Lake is hoping to see most of its fleet of vehicles converted to compressed natural gas by next year.

Council approved sending in an application for nearly $1.4 million as part of the provincial government’s Municipal GHG Challenge Fund.

The city’s economic development coordinator, Ashten Vlahovich, says the conversion could save the community about $100,000 in fuel costs yearly.

Up to $78,500 has been budgeted for the project with about $10,000 spent already on the application process.

The new program aims at helping municipalities take steps to reduce the impacts on climate change.

The city wants to convert 48 municipal vehicles from gas or diesel to compressed natural gas.

A fuelling station would also have to be built.
