Elliot Lake council considering eliminating events

Elliot Lake council could cut funding to some local events.

Despite coming in under budget, council wants more details and further discussion as to whether

the city should be in the event-planning business.

Council budgeted a $39,400 deficit for five community events in 2017.

Wendy Rowland, the city’s director of community services, told council Monday night Winterfest, Uranium Heritage Days, the Fun Run, geology tours and local parades came in well below that at only $31,400.

However, Councillor Tammy Van Roon said she is quite alarmed with the loss of money, which she considers significant compared to the year before.

She asked council to defer passing the motion accepting the financial report until more details are provided so council can consider adjusting costs or eliminating events.

Council agreed and a more detailed report is expected within the next month.
