Sudbury perceived front-runner to host Ring of Fire smelter

It’s almost like gold fever for four Northern Ontario communities starting to compete for the Ring of Fire smelter.   Noront Resources needs a smelter to process the ore and its president admits Sudbury has several advantages because it’s a world leader in mining.  Mayor Brian Bigger is confident the Nickel City can land the one billion dollar plant for the same reasons.  Construction on the smelter won’t start until 2020 and would take five to seven years to build.   The other cities competing for the mega project are Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie and a joint venture from Thunder Bay and the Fort Williams First Nation.
