Treaties Recognition Week: learning about Indigenous communities

Northern hospitality was the order of the day for the Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, David Zimmer, this week.
Zimmer was accompanied by Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee to Birch Island on Monday to launch Treaties Recognition Week.

The two met with Whitefish River First Nation Chief, Franklin Paibomsai and several children from the local school to launch two new books.

Zimmer was delighted by the children, even getting down on the floor to share some photo time.

“Today, there are more than 40 treaties and other land arrangements.”

Eleven-year-old Alex Hebert of the Dokis First Nation, presented his book Alex Shares his Wampum Belt to the minister.

That book and another released last week, Dakota Talks, focus on treaties.

Both Paibomsai and Madahbee echoed his comments and welcomed the children and other visitors to the launch.
