Support needed for Blood Clinic – Espanola area

Blood donations in Espanola have fallen dramatically and Canadian Blood Services is putting out the call to help out.

A regional territory manager for Canadian Blood Services is alarmed with the sharp drop in blood donations in Espanola over the last six months.

Joanne Drake says the drop in donations has dropped dramatically since May.

She says the service sets a goal of 86 units every month, but while they collected 82 in May, donations have declined steadily to 73 at the last clinic held October 2nd.

Drake says at least 200 new blood donors are needed every month in Northern Ontario.

She adds there have been changes made for eligibility to attract more donors.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, but all other age limits have been removed.

She encourages potential donors to check out the criteria on the website and call if they have any questions.

Donating blood only takes about an hour of time, but can save up to three lives.

The next blood clinic is set for the Espanola Knights of Columbus hall on Monday, November 27th.
