Facelift continues at Elliot Lake turnoff

A neglected welcome centre is getting a much needed facelift by the City of Elliot Lake.

Motorists will notice some changes have been made to the welcome centre at the intersection of Highway 17 and 108 and Elliot Lake council says more work is planned for the Trailhead Welcome Centre.

In May, council passed a resolution to enter into a 10-year lease with the landowner, the Township of the North Shore.

The building had been closed up and neglected over the years, but city council made a concerted effort this year to get work done on the site.

Refurbishing is underway, signage added and plumbing upgraded providing washroom facilities for visitors during the summer.

The city has applied for funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) of $42,500 for more improvements and will contribute $52,500, for an investment of $95,000.

They are awaiting word on the application.

The purpose of rejuvenating the site is to increase awareness of Elliot Lake and its attractions.
