Julie Payette, the new Governor General and patron of The Royal Canadian Legion officially received the symbolic first poppy of the 2017 National Poppy Campaign on Monday at Rideau Hall.
It was presented by Royal Canadian Legion President David Flannigan at Rideau Hall.
Locally, Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella made the official proclamation for Poppy Week at Monday’s council meeting.
Espanola Mayor Ron Piche will help raise the Poppy Flag at the town office this Friday morning at 11 am.

Poppies will also be available to the general public starting tomorrow.
Every year, over 20 million poppies are distributed in Canada to support veterans programs and services.
Funds raised go into programs and services for veterans and their families.
