Hep C on the rise in the area

Algoma Public Health says Hepatitis C is on the rise in the area.

Between 2012 and 2016 the rate of new cases of the disease went up 7.2 per cent. APH says last year alone the rates for people between the ages of 20 and 29 were 3.8 times higher than the provincial average.

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can cause severe damage to the liver. It’s spread through contact with infected blood and body fluids.

APH says you can help protect yourself by practicing safe sex and not sharing things like needles, razors and toothbrushes. You can find more information about Hepatitis C at Algoma Public Health’s website.
