We’re seeing a variation on fraudsters trying to part you from your hard-earned cash. Police in West Nipissing got a complaint about a woman being mailed a very large cheque from an unknown company with instructions to deposit it. Shortly after that, the company called her asking for the cheque back and concocts an excuse like it was sent to her by mistake. If you give back the money using one of your cheques you’ll be out lots of cash because the cheque they sent you is a fake. West Nipissing Police Inspector Ray St. Pierre has some very simple advice for people and that is don’t deposit cheques from companies you don’t know. If you deposit the company cheque, the bank will soon find out it’s a fake and will then reverse the transaction leaving you minus a chunk of cash.
