Highway 11 riddled with issues over the long weekend

Highway 11 had a busy long weekend as almost the entire northern corridor had been closed at one point. On Friday afternoon a three-foot sinkhole opened between Strickland and Smooth Rock Falls, delaying traffic by two hours. Early Sunday morning two tractor trailers collided head-on just outside of Cochrane, closing the highway for six hours. And late Monday afternoon, forest fires broke out in an area spanning from Hearst to Longlac, with the Highway re-opening yesterday afternoon.

Between the fires, the sinkhole and the collision, hydro crews, emergency services, the MNR and the MTO had staff deployed nearly every day. James Bay OPP Detachment Commander Mike Pilon says it’s been a huge collaborative effort between the MTO, Hydro One and TransCanada Pipeline crews, the MNR’s fire suppression teams, local firefighters, emergency services, and police.
